Trigger Point Injection Q & A

What are Trigger Points?

Muscles are composed of bundles of strong fibers that help the body remain strong and flexible throughout a wide range of motions and activities. Sometimes, though, specific areas of muscle tissue can become irritated, inflamed or damaged, often due to overuse or strain. When this irritation or damage is not addressed, a tight knot or “trigger point” can form. Trigger points can be very sensitive to touch, and they can also cause painful symptoms that occur elsewhere in areas served by the muscle. In addition to overuse injuries, trigger points can also occur following slip-and-fall accidents or car accidents, from carrying heavy loads like backpacks or briefcases, from having poor posture, or from standing or sitting for long periods of time. The tension created by trigger points can often pull the body out of its normal alignment, resulting in widespread symptoms.

What Kinds of Symptoms Can Trigger Points Cause?

Trigger points usually cause significant deep pain in the immediate area where the trigger point is located, but they can also cause other symptoms, including:

  • pain or discomfort when the area surrounding the trigger point is pressed
  • radiating pain, numbness, tingling or burning sensations
  • chronic pain issues such as headaches, neck pain and shoulder pain
  • muscle spasms or cramps
  • muscle or joint stiffness or reduced range of motion
  • pain and other symptoms during activity as well as while at rest

What Are Trigger Point Injections?

Trigger point injections use special solutions of anesthetics and anti-inflammatory medications to help trigger points relax so normal healing can take place. Injections typically are administered in multiple sessions over several weeks to ensure the area is fully healed. For maximum results and long-term healing, injections are usually combined with other types of therapeutic care, including deep tissue massage, rehabilitation therapy, chiropractic adjustments and lifestyle changes to promote better overall health.
